What is Día de los Muertos?

Día de los Muertos or Día de Muertos is an annual holiday that originated in Mesoamerica and honors loved ones and community members who have passed away. Though it is most largely observed in Mexico, Día de los Muertos is also celebrated across Latin America and the United States with varying traditions across locations and communities. Typically, Día de los Muertos is celebrated at the tail end of October and the beginning of November, most commonly October 31st through November 2nd. But we'll be celebrating from October 28th through Election Day November 2nd.

This is an opportunity to honor our past while shaping a brighter, more just future. We look forward to having you join us in this meaningful event.

Lets Celebrate Día de los Muertos Together!

November 2nd

11:30 - 1pm

525 N Bonita Ave

We invite you to join us for a special Día de los Muertos event, where we honor both our cultural traditions and the ongoing struggles that impact our community. This year, our community altar will focus on critical issues such as immigration, racism as a public health crisis, and gender violence. Through this powerful tradition, we will remember those we’ve lost and raise awareness for much-needed change.

  • Immigration: Honoring lives affected by immigration policies and the continued fight for humane reform.
  • Racism as a Public Health Crisis: Highlighting how racism affects community health and well-being, while calling for systemic change.
  • Gender Violence: Remembering those lost to gender-based violence and advocating for a future free from fear and violence.

You are invited to contribute to our altar by bringing an ofrenda between October 28th and the event date November 2nd.

Suggested ofrendas include:

  • Photographs, artwork, or personal items representing loved ones affected by immigration, racism, or gender violence.
  • Messages or poems advocating for justice and equity.
  • Symbols of hope and resilience, such as candles, flowers, or cultural items.

For more information or to contribute to the altar, please contact Patricia Medina at pmedina@ywcatucson.org or 520.884.7810.

Why is this Important?

In 2024, YWCA Greater Austin introduced the Dia de los Muertos project to YWCA USA to honor the Latinx and BIPOC communities through culturally significant celebrations. The project offers opportunities for community involvement, and in partnership with the YWomenVote campaign, this initiative also encourages civic engagement, empowering our communities to shape their future through voting.

The DDLM project is more than a celebration—it is a call to honor our ancestors while advocating for future generations. Through culturally rooted events and advocacy efforts, we create space for reflection, unity, and the collective action necessary to shape a more just and equitable future. Each day of the week will represent a voting theme and why it's important to use your voice and vote this election.
