The STAT team is back from Montgomery, Alabama after attending Equal Justice Initiative’s Peace and Justice Summit, as well as the opening of the Legacy Museum: From Enslavement to Mass Incarceration and the National Memorial for Peace and Justice. Three of our team members attended the event, and are planning on hosting a truth and reconciliation “talk back” session at the YWCA (525 N Bonita Ave) on May 30th at 6pm.

This trip was incredibly powerful and important to not only develop a deeper understanding of slavery and its evolution in this country, but to witness how important it is to have these larger conversations on how slavery still impacts each and every one of us today.

As Michelle Alexander said, “we are birthing a new nation that has yet to be.” In order to create this new equitable nation, it’s critical that we recognize how privilege and oppression show up in our communities and in our own lives, and that we acknowledge the direct connection to racial terrorism and genocide that founded this country.
