YWCA Volunteer Opportunities

With a staff of fifteen----only five are full-time employees----the YWCA provides programs and services to more than 20,000 individuals each year.  This would not be possible without more than 400 volunteers who are involved in all aspects of the organization.

Volunteers work with staff to design and implement programs, play integral roles in service delivery, develop financial resources, assure quality and direction, and adherence to our mission by serving on the Finance and Executive Committees and Board of Directors.  The YWCA is particularly proud of the fact that we have attracted reliable committed volunteers who are willing to offer their expertise to our organization.

Volunteer therapists provide long-term counseling to women through the Women’s Counseling Network, professional trainers provide workshops for the participants in our women’s leadership program and annual conference, more than 200 people----including 80 middle, high school, and college students---have been trained to serve as small group facilitators in our Racial Justice Program and to facilitate the Understanding Racism Program.  Middle and high school students plan and oversee all aspects of the YWCA Racial Justice Youth Program and oversee a $5,000 small grants program.  The YWCA always needs volunteers to provide direct service to unemployed women who use the services of Your Sister’s Closet and to help us manage the inventory of donated clothing.

Each program director is responsible for volunteer recruitment and training.  Special training programs have been developed for the Racial Justice Program and are used as a model in other communities.  We believe that the key to a good volunteer program is providing excellent staff support, valuing the work of volunteers and providing them with opportunities for meaningful work that clearly makes a difference for our organization.
